XUANDE SIX-CHARACTER MARK, ZHENGDE

Painted and enamelled around the exterior with a band of five iron-red carp above green and black cresting waves, the interior painted with a central panel enclosing a single stylized lotus spray within double-line borders repeated at the rim and foot

Lot Essay

Cf. the similar dish in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, included in the Special Exhibition of Hsuan-Te Porcelain, 1980, Catalogue no. 137; another in the Percival David Foundation, Catalogue, section 5, no. A 768 is discussed by S. Jenyns, Ming Pottery and Porcelain, p. 72 where the author suggests that the Xuande mark is written in a Hongzhi or Zhengde hand.
The companion dish to this lot was sold in the E.T. Chow sale, Hong Kong, 19 May 1981, lot 432; a similar but slightly smaller dish, was sold in our London Rooms, 4 December 1995, lot 112.
