A CARVED RED LACQUER EIGHT-LEAF SCREEN
DATED QIANLONG BINGXU YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1766, AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIOD

The upper two thirds of each leaf with a tall rectangular red lacquer panel carved in relief with legendary and historical figures in detailed terraced landscapes, each scene identified in one corner, on various fine trellis and diaper-pattern grounds, all above a band of smaller lacquer panels carved with natural landscapes with birds and small figures, the reverse of black lacquer with a gilt inscription covering all eight leaves, signed and dated, cracks and losses restored, some rubbing to the reverse gilt inscription
each panel 83 1/4 x 19 3/4 in. (211.5 x 50 cm.)

Each of the scenes on the large panels has been named, such as dongshan sizhu, (Playing) Stringed and Wind Instruments by the Eastern Hills; another shows Xiwangmu and attendants in a chariot drawn by a phoenix, meeting with a prince
