cover 1899 (2 Mar.) large red band envelope (130x218mm) bearing, on reverse, C.I.P. 1c. pair tied by Shanghai Dollar chop, the face with Koban 2s. tied by a fine strike of "SHANGHAI/I.J.P.O." c.d.s., a couple of light creases, fresh and fine.

Note: The 2s. letter rate to Japan was introduced on 1st January 1899 making it the same as the inland postage. However, on 1st April 1899 the rate was increased to 3s. This is thought to be the only example of the 2s. rate to Japan
