Lot Essay

Jade plaques were frequently set within other media to embellish decorative objects and furniture. Cf. the plaques set within a gilt mount on a wooden ruyi sceptre illustrated in Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, p. 95, pl. 73 and those set into a cloisonne ruyi sceptre in Chinese Cloisonne, The Clague Collection, p. 99, pl. 42.

Compare also the Ming Dynasty cloisonne moonflask inset with jade dragons illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, pl. 12.
