AN IMPERIAL CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER DOCUMENT BOX AND COVER

Finely carved in high relief to the cover with two pairs of five-clawed horned dragons and phoenixes with elaborate plumage amid a leafy peony and lotus meander reserved on a diaper ground, each face of the box similarly carved with single pairs below a lotus-scroll at the rim, the front mounted with a gilt-bronze plaque and latch finely worked with archaistic elements, repeated on the hinges to the reverse, with loose ruyi-shaped handles to either side, the interior inset with a black lacquered tray (minor losses, several fine age cracks, minor repairs)
