A RARE IMPERIAL PARCEL GILT-BRONZE 'DRAGON' PAPER WEIGHT
QIANLONG

Of rectangular shape, the top cast with a scaly five-clawed dragon standing foursquare it's head held forward, its back arched to serve as a handle, framed by two coiled ferocious dragons and two pairs of confronting dragons in mutual pursuit of a flaming pearl, all in relief on a ground incised with bats in flight among clouds and between flames radiating from the raised knob in the centre, the reverse with a lengthy poem and dedication to the Emperor Qianlong, signed Liu Yong 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (21.5 x 19 cm.)

Liu Yong (1720-1804) from Zhucheng, Shandong, was a high-ranking official in Emperor Qianlong's court. He was a learned scholar and well known for his calligraphy.

The design recalls seals such as the gilt-bronze example illustrated in The Palace Collection, Beijing, Joint Publishing Co. (HK), 1985, p. 80 and the jade version idem., p. 79.
