A FINE AND VERY RARE WHITE JADE FIGURE OF A RECUMBENT HOUND

The stone of exceptionally even white tone and of very fine texture, carved as an elongated hound lying flat with its head resting between the outstretched front legs, the spine and folds on either side of the body articulated with delicate lines and ridges ending to the rear with a softly coiled tail, the underside of the beast with very well carved details describing paws and the collar

Lot Essay

A yellow and black jade carving of a dog from the Dr. Arthur Sackler collection dated to the Tang Dynasty in this position but with raised head was included in the exhibition organised by The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Chinese Jade Throughout The Ages, 1975, Catalogue, no. 204; another pale celadon jade hound from the Joan Barrow collection dated from the Tang to Song dynasty in a similar posture and with similar details including the knobbed backbone and the exceptionally well carved paws and claws and the muscular tension below the surface of the skin was included in the Bluett and Sons exhibition, Dr. Newton's Zoo, 1981, Catalogue, no. 22.
