Lot Essay

The guan belongs to a small group of early Ming jars painted in a bold style with scrolling bands and borders formed by thick stems and thick petals. Compare a jar illustrated in the S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Catalogue, vol. I, pl. 24 and a jar sold in our New York Rooms, 29 November 1984, lot 170.
