A LARGE LATE MING BLUE AND WHITE 'DRAGON' DISH
ENCIRCLED WANLI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Painted in characteristic deep cobalt-blue tones with a central medallion containing two striding dragons divided by a flaming pearl and ruyi-head clouds, with four striding dragons in the well, all reserved on a flame ground, the reverse with a continuous lotus meander, all between double-line borders
12 1/2 in. (31.8 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A Wanli dish of slightly larger size and of similar pattern is illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, pl. 725; a smaller dish from the Hay and Riesco Collections was included in the O.C.S. Exhibition of Ming Blue and White Porcelain, London, 1946, Catalogue, no. 78.
