A RARE CARVED EARLY MING RED LACQUER BOX AND COVER
INCISED XUANDE SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The cover carved with a large blossoming peony spray surrounded by smaller blooms, buds and leaves, the sides of the box and cover with continuous flowering scrolls with the blooms alternating full-face and in profile, the mark incised in a vertical line to the back (age cracks and minor repairs)

Lot Essay

A related Xuande box and cover was included in the Exhibition of Chinese and Associated Lacquer from the Garner Collection, British Museum, London, 1973, Catalogue, no. 35, pl. 16b.
