QIANLONG FIVE-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Modelled as a ding with vertical arched loop handles on the flat rim, decorated with four flower-heads on scrolling peony on a turquoise ground within borders of deep blue ruyi-lappets at the shoulder and around the short cabriole legs, the neck with a daisy meander, the legs and handles similarly decorated (losses to enamel)

Compare with a similar censer from the Property of The Gordon Boys' Choir School, sold on behalf of the Gordon Centenary Appeal in our London Rooms, 16 December 1981, lot 315, which was possibly acquired by General Gordon in China, circa 1860.
