ZHENGTONG

The deep, rounded sides rising to a flat everted rim, painted to the central medallion with a five-clawed dragon and a fanciful phoenix to either side a flaming pearl amid clouds and fire-scrolls, the well decorated in anhua with striding dragons, the straight rim with a border of swirling waves, the exterior decorated with four winged-dragons in mutual pursuit, the cobalt of strong inky tone (break restuck and restored)

Lot Essay

The dragon to the interior medallion compares quite well to one painted on the side of a large guan dated to the same period illustrated in Imperial Porcelain: Recent Discoveries of Jingdezhen Ware, pl. 83. Both dragons have a distinctive muscular square snout, large palms centred with circular pads, the mane, beard, and wisps of fur at the joints similarly combed and curled.
