Lot Essay

The present lot displays all the qualities of Song dynasty Bodhisattvas in its remarkably tranquil facial expression and relaxed appearance, enhanced by its elegant posture. The folds of clothing are particularly well depicted giving the sculpture an element of fluidity. Compare with a similar figure with a fuller face from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection, sold in our New York Rooms, 1 December 1994, lot 171. Also cf. the example previously from the Stephen Junkunc III Collection, sold in our New York Rooms, 21 March 1997, lot 354.
