A VERY RARE BUDDHIST PAINTING OF GUANYIN AND FOUR BODHISATTVAS
DATED SHUNZHI TENTH YEAR (A.D. 1654) MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely painted with Guanyin standing in the upper left corner holding a willow branch in her right hand and an amphora in the other, wearing layered white robes over blue garments, next to four Bodhisattvas, in clockwise direction, the first with hands in anjalimudra, the second wearing elaborate robes with the right hand raised and the left holding a ruyi sceptre, the third in a sinuous pose with hands in anjalimudra and each foot on a lotus base, the last in the centre with hands in dhyanamudra, all with halos around the head, eyes downcast with serene expressions, long pendulous ears and urnas in the middle of the foreheads, amid swirling clouds in the background, dated Shunzhi 10th year, corresponding to 1654

Lot Essay

The inscriptions indicate that this painting was commissioned by Li Ying, for the head of Buddhist Monk at the Da Xing Temple, and was respectably painted by the artisan Jiang Cheng of Pu Province, dated the fifth day and second month of the tenth year of the Shunzi year (1654).
