A CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON FOLIATE-RIM DISH
MING DYNASTY

Carved to the centre of the interior with a lotus bloom and large furling leaves, the deep and gently curving well with a continuous lotus meander, the exterior similarly decorated, covered in a thick celadon glaze of rich olive-green tone
13 1/2 in. (34.1 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Previously sold in Hong Kong, 18 May 1988, lot 122.

A related dish of the same size is illustrated by Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, Vol. I, cat. no. 297, p. 315. A larger dish (47 cm.) of the same design is also recorded, op. cit., no. 292, p. 314; and another with a single lotus spray in the centre surrounded by radiating lotus sprays in the well is illustrated by Rogan, Antiques in Australia from Private Collections, pl. 68.

A dish with foliate rim but with a simpler lotus design in the centre and an undecorated well is illustrated by Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, no. 98A, p. 184.
