BREAKY BOTTOM ESTATE
IN EAST SUSSEX
To be lying in London S.E.1 following the sale
Breaky Bottom vineyard lies in an isolated valley in a fold of the Chalk Downs at Rodmell, near Lewes in East Sussex. The estate was established in 1974 by Peter Hall who has, during the intervening 20 years, laboured unceasingly to produce top quality, distinctive dry white varietal wines. Happily, as a result of his resolve and dedication, his wines are now rightfullyrecognised as being amongst the finest produced in England. During the course of a recent informal tasting at the winery we concurred with the proprietor's view that his wines also have the ability to age and improve. The 1990's were exceptional - the 1992/3 wines here, excellent and developing character and complexity. They cannot be dismissed as 'summer drinking' - they happily compete with vinous cousins from Burgundy, Alsace, the Upper Loire and the New World. In a recent article for the Sunday Express, winewriter and broadcaster Oz Clarke made the following summary of the estate and the Müller Thurgau tasted - 'Quite simply, I know no wine like it in the world - fresh honeyed with haunting tobacco spice - one of the great originals, created by one of the great originals'.
All the wines are offered directly from the reserves of the estate and are in original cartons.

spicy flavours, similar to many New World varietals,
but with better acidity.
