The Wine and Spirit Trades' Benevolent Society (Patron:Her Grace The Duchess of Westminster) THE BENEVOLENT CELLAR The Wine and Spirit Trades' Benevolent Society, 'The Benevolent' to give it its familiar title, was founded in 1886 to help present and former members of the Wine and Spirit trades at their time of need. The charity manages retirement homes, monthly grants of money, major cash grants to provide such items as wheelchairs, help with nursing home fees and an advice and visiting service. Each year it helps over 300 people, its beneficiaries being mainly the elderly, infirm and lonely. All have in common long and faithful service to the drink industry. In 1992, when the charity was under the chairmanship of Michael Broadbent, a major auction of wine, donated to raise much needed funds, was held. This sale raised the magnificent total of (46,000. Arising from this, a committee was formed to manage "The Benevolent Cellar", wines and spirits donated to the charity specifically to be sold at Christie's in order to generate funds. This section of the sale, lots 885 to 941 is the first such sale, and we sincerely hope that you will find wines which are of interest to you, knowing that your bids will transform into hard cash for the charity. If any client would like to consider donating wines for future sales, either small lots of interesting wines, or cases of younger wines, such donations would be enormously gratefully received. This is an exceptionally worthy cause. Initial contact should be made with Paul Bowker at the Wine Department Lots up to and including two magnums and five bottles will be lying at Christie's Donated by The Worshipful Company of Vintners
