It is by no means unusual for private buyers of fine wines to find themselves at a point where their hobby has outgrown that status. It is inherent in the nature of wine that it instills in people an enthusiasm and passion that make over-purchasing almost an inevitability.
What is unusual is for this to grow into a thriving business. In 1988, Jennifer, Marchioness of Bute reached the point where her intense passion for wine and what is, by her own admission, over-enthusiasm had meant that something had to be done. Her houses in Scotland and London were full to overflowing with cases arriving from Bordeaux, Burgundy and other areas of France and various countries. Her decision was to create Bute Wines, which has since developed a formidable reputation as a major buyer and major stock-holder. In 1995 Lady Bute was one of a select number of British wine merchants featured in a series of profiles on the B.B.C. by Jancis Robinson.
