Meursault, Genevrières, Hospices--Vintage 1994
Hospices de Beaune. French-bottled: Verget
In 1994, the relatively new but highly acclaimed négociant business of Verget - a partnership of two Belgians, Jean-Marie Guffens and Jean Ryckaert - acquired two lots (13 barrels) of Meursault-Genevrières at the famous Hospices de Beaune auction.
This was the first time that the pair had purchased wine in this way, and the style is noticeably different from the usual Verget "house" style - but nonetheless outstanding. Initially received by them in 100 new oak, they later transferred it out of this, not wishing the oak to become the dominant element. This Meursault is undoubtedly oakier and more opulent than most Verget wines, but shows great class and is in many ways an archetypal rich, powerful, opulent Meursault. Only about 300 cases were produced.
