Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A). Château-bottled
Very bin-soiled label. Level into neck
First tasted in cask by Jack Plumb on a tour of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol in August 1949. I well recall a dinner in London when the '47 and '48 were served alongside. Edmund Penning-Rowsell, the dean of Bordeaux wine writers, much prefered the '48, certainly less obvious, less opulent than the '47 but with fragrance as well as the '48 backbone. Rich. Lovely. Last tasted October 1993. M.B.
