Pomerol, cru exceptionnel. English-bottled by John Harvey & Sons
Damaged and bin-soiled label. Level top-shoulder
Even the connoisseurs of the post-war Pomerols - or the proprietor Mme. Loubat, or the enterprising Jean-Pierre Mouiex - could not have predicted the starry ride and phenomenal price commanded by Pétrus. Allowing for the small production, very little could have been shipped for bottling in England. Probably supplied by Cruse, a hogshead bottled in Bristol and also probably retailing at under 1 a bottle (I joined Harveys in 1955 but cannot recall it on the list). Should be superb. M.B.
