Cahors--Vintage 1970
South West France. Domaine-bottled: Clos de Gamot
An extraordinary estate. When I visited it in September 1972 I discovered that they had stocks of most of their best vintages back to 1914 - in cask! The old wines were in quarter casks, with bottles of the same vintage under the scantlings used to top up the casks when wine was drawn. The wines still had fruit. Why they were not oxidised I do not know.
We shipped a wide range for sale at Christie's. The 1970 was the youngest. My original notes cannot apply to this nearly thirty year-old wine. It will fool your friends! M.B.
