Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Bin-soiled labels, one slightly damaged. Levels: two between 2 and 3cms., two at 4cms. below base of corks
At the time this magnificent wine was made there was no market for even the best mature Rhône wines; indeed none at auction until the early 1980s. How things have changed, and rightly. Jaboulet's '61 La Chapelle is one of the now great classic Rhônes; first tasted by me in 1967 "a lovely strapping mouthful" - and, more recently, lovely colour; soft, velvety - magnificent - one of my top scores in Dr. Berger's "Parker 100" tasting in Hamburg, October 1993.
