1988: A prolonged wet spring followed a mild winter. The weather continued cool and damp, though the flowering and fruit set were satisfactory. What made the vintage was a long sunny summer, three months of hot and dry weather continuing through to October, fortunately inter-spurced with showers. A good crop of healthy ripe grapes was harvested before the late autumn rains set in. Hot sun and dry conditions produced a high sugar content and concentration of flesh, resulting in high alcohol and extract. All in all, the recipe for deep, rich, well-structured, long lasting wines." GVWBII
