Madeira--Vintage 1860
Sercial Solera, Cossart
The 285 square mile island of Madeira lies in the Atlantic some 400 miles off the coast of North Africa. Vineyards were planted on the South Coast of the island shortly after its dicovery by Portuguese explorers in 1418. Vines introduced included Malvesia (Malmsey), Bual and Tarrantez--all producing luscious, rich and very fragrant wines; Verdelho and Sercial (originally Reisling from the Rhine) produced very dry wines.
Madeira wines are known to live longer than any other in the world. It is reported that Sir Winston Churchill once said upon tasting an eighteenth century bottle from Madeira: "Gentlemen, do you realize that Marie Antoinette was still alive when this wine was made?"
