Madeira, Rainwater--Vintage 1872
Justino Henriques.
The name Rainwater, as described by Noel Cossart, was originally used in the late 18th century by the Southern Colonial American market. It is said that small amounts of rain seeped into the pipes of Madeira which were pushed out to the ships for transport. The resulting mixture of Verdelho and water was a soft, light Madeira. It has hence become a rather generic description for a straw-colored blend of Madeira containing some components of pure water.
