Michael Broadbent on the 1953 vintage in Germany: "Wines of enormous charm and appeal, deservedly popular when put on the market. In those days vintages tended to be first listed retail in the Spring of the second year after the vintage. I tasted masses at the time and many since. One word of warning, the quality of corks used by the Germans in the mid-1950's was variable, often poor; on the other hand, the wines were mainly expected to be drunk young, not cellared for 10 or 20 years. Having siad that, the best are still lovely to drink now." GVWB Hattenheim has some of the best vineyards in the Rheingau and von Simmern is one of the top producers.
