Wiltinger Braune Kupp Beerenauslese--Vintage 1971
Saar. Le Gallais.
"A magnificent vintage, more on a par with the '49 and '53, rather than the heavyweight '59 and the sweet ripe '64. Early flowering and well formed; a fine summer, with sunshine and warmth from early July through the autumn, the lack of rain concentrating the flesh. Perfectly healthy, fully mature grapes, picked in ideal conditions. Arguably the most perfect in the Mosel and its tributaries, the best Saar and Ruwer for decades, the early morning mists providing moist nourishment and burning off to continue ripening. Overall the quality was high, almost too high for the bigger commercial houses.
My recommendation: drink up the Spätlesen and lower qualities, but look out for Auslesen from the better estates, even from Winzerverein (cooperartives). All are woefully undervalued at auction even though they have been off merchant's lists for years. The Beeren and Trockenbeerenauslesen are still magnificent but scarcer and more pricey, though not compared to the price of Yquem." GVWB
According to Frank Schoonmaker: "In favorable and great years, the best Wiltingers are unsurpassed by any other white wines in Germany or in the world." FSEW
