Erbacher Markobrunn Beerenauslese--Vintage 1971
Rheingau. Staatsweingüter.
Schoonmaker's Encyclopedia entry for Marcobrunn is worth noting here: "Celebrated German vineyard, one of the Rheingau's best. It stakes its name from the Marcobrunnen, an attractive little fountain in red sandstone, which on the old river road, marks the village boundary of Erbach and of Hattenheim. About half the vines are in each village, although the fountain is in Erbach, and a local poet has written, 'Let Erbach keep the water. Give Hattenheim the wine.' Wines from the Erbach portion (produced by Schloss Reinhartshausen, the State Domain, or Staatsweinguter, etc.) were generally marketed as Erbacher Marcobrunn, even before 1971, and those from over the border of Hattenheim (from Freiherr Langerth von Simmern, Graf von Schönborn, etc.) simply as Marcobrunner. Today all must be sold as Erbacher Marcobrun in order to comply with the new German Wine Law. Although particularly outstanding in dry years, the Marcobrunners on the whole are unsurpassed by the wines of any other German vineyard--fruity, racy, well-balanced, they have truly astonishing bouquet and breed."
