AN EXTRAORDINARY RANGE OF GRANGE..Including a complete vertical of Grange 1955-1991 with excellent overall appearance, and near or full-case quantities of the 1968, 1969, 1971, 1975, and 1976 vintages. One almost never sees Penfolds from the 1960's except at auction in Australia. Complete verticals are virtually unique--the Penfolds winemaker knows of but two other complete Grange Hermitage verticals in addition to the one offered here...Grange Hermitage, known simply as Grange since 1990, is regarded internationally as the finest wine made in Australia. It is known for its longevity, power and a distinctive complexity attributed in part to its superb sources of fruit (mostly Shiraz, blended with up to 15 Cabernet Sauvignon) as well as maturation in 100 new American oak. The first vintage was produced as an experiment by the late Max Schubert in 1951, and its revolutionary style aroused at the outset the opposition of many wine judges as well as Penfolds' corporate hierarchy...The collection also includes substantial quantities of three of the rare "Special Bin Wines": Bin 80A, Bin 820, and Bin 920. The Special Bin Wines originated with the "show wines" made by Max Schubert from the 1962 vintage, when Penfolds re-entered the Australian wine show system. With these wines, produced only in good vintages and in small quantities (less than 1000), Penfolds' winemakers attempt to "push the outer edge of the envelope" of quality, with stunning results. The Special Bin Wines are blends of approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Shiraz, the former from Coonawarra and the latter either from Coonawarra or Kalimna. Quantities as offered below are rarely if ever seen at auction..
