The Haarlem born painter is known to have trained under Hendrik Mommers and Nicolaes Berchem. His style reflects the influence of his fellow townsmen Jan van Huchtenburgh and Philips Wouwerman. In the choice of his subjects, often depicting cavalry battles and hunting scenes, his indebtness to Wouwerman is especially clear. The present lot however, made early in his career, betrays the idiom of Berchem in it's play of light and in the quiet atmosphere.
