Lot Essay

The identity of the artist, of whom circa 20 signed works are recorded in the RKD, has so far not been established. Traditionally he has been identified as Jan Snellinck III (1640-1691). However, it is likely that the Monogrammist IS can be identified as Jan Spanjaert (circa 1590-1664), who is recorded as a painter of genre scenes in Delft. We are grateful to F. Meyer from the RKD for his help in cataloguing this lot.
