Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spines (small tears to spines, extremities slightly scuffed). Provenance: Walter Sandilands, 8th Baron Torphichen (d.1765, signatures, armorial bookplate, presented to:); E.T. (inscription, dated 1764, noting the gift of the book).
FIRST EDITION of this 'excellent abridgment of the first ten volumes of the "Lettres Édifiantes;" it contains particulars of the Jesuit missions in Peru by Ricolo and Nyel, in Mexico, California, Hudson's Bay, and Barrera's Abode among the Moxos and Chiriguanos of South America. Mr.Lockman proposed to have given the other fifteen which had then been published, but they never appeared'. Sabin 40708. (2)
