AARON ARROWSMITH (1750-1833)
A Map of the United States of America drawn from a number of Critical Researches. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1796, but 1802-[08].
Engraved map of North America on four separate sheets, hand-coloured in outline, overall approximately 64 x 146cm. (Some unobtrusive staining and browning). Contemporary straight-grained green morocco slip-case and box.
A fine copy of the important 'third issue' of Arrowsmith's celebrated map of North America by Aaron Arrowsmith, 'easily the foremost cartographer of his time' (Tooley Dictionary). This third issue includes important information gathered by Samuel Hearne during his exploration of the Coppermine River between 1771 and 1772. Hearne submitted his manuscript notes to the Hudson's Bay River Company, which kept the information to itself in favour of economic advantage. Tooley America p. 99, no. 79(e).
