ILE DE BOURBON (French, mid 18th-cenutry)

Manuscript chart of Reunion (formerly Bourbon), ink and wash on thick paper, 46.5 x 67.2cm. The map orientated to the south covers the whole of the island, the principal coastal settlements in red, headlands and inlets named in black, rhumblines in red and black, rocks and sand in black, a few soundings in red, a single shipping route indicated 'routte venant du l'arge, routte pour aller au moilage St denis, routte por Saint paol' (Remains of old guard on verso, occasional small spot, annotations in ink on verso.)

An early French chart of Réunion possibly drawn up for Bouvet de Lozier. Bouvet de Lozier (1706-1757) was Governor of Bourbon between 1750 and 1752, and over the period 1748-1757 commanded the French fleet off the east coast of India. His tenure as Governor is generally regarded as having been successful, although colonisation was still slow and Bouvet had to counter what had had been a flourishing relationship between the islanders and pirates.
