WILLIAM HENRY FERNYHOUGH
[A series of twelve profile portraits of Aborigines of New South Wales; drawn from life and on stone.] Sydney: J.G.Austin and Co., No.12 Bridge Street, 1836 [watermarked: Fellows 1835]. 4° (28.3 x 22.5cm). 12 lithographed plates after Fernyhough, extra-illustrated with a loosely-inserted 13th plate after Fernyhough by Austin & Co. Piper. The Native who accompanied Major Mitchell in his expedition to the interior. (Light creasing and soiling to first plate, light soiling to the second.) Original yellow wrappers, the upper cover with letterpress title and imprint within a border of repeat typographic ornaments, a repeat of the 12th plate on the lower cover (small tears to backstrip with very light loss, very light soiling), 20th-century cloth portfolio.
FIRST EDITION, UNRECORDED INTERMEDIATE (?)SECOND ISSUE. RARE and "justly renowned for its uncharacteristically sympathetic treatment of the Aborigines, pathetically arrayed in the cast-off remnants of European finery." (Wantrup Australian Rare Books p.298). Wantrup describes the second issue as having a lithographed leaf of newspaper reviews to precede the plates which is not present here, and an illustration on the lower cover which is. The subjects are all silhouette portraits of identified Sydney Aboriginals, and include Bungaree (d.1830) who accompanied Flinders in the Investigator in 1801-1802 (and thus became the first Aboriginal to circum-navigate Australia) and his principle wife Gooseberry. The series (available both coloured and uncoloured) was popular and issued in various permutations. Fernyhough appears to have re-worked the plates for each issue, and publication continued after Austin's death in 1837 (and W.Baker published an enlarged edition with 17 plates in the mid-1840s). Cf.
