ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912)

Scott's Last Expedition. London: Spottiswoode & Co. Ltd. for Smith, Elder & Co., 1913. 2 volumes, 8° (23.2 x 16.4cm). Half-titles, titles in red and black. Maps and plates after E.A.Wilson, H.G.Ponting and others, some coloured, some folding. (Some light spotting.) Original blue cloth gilt, t.e.g., dust-jackets (vol.I dust-jacket with 25mm neatly repaired tear to upper joint, both dust-jackets with very slight discolouration to spines and small chips to their head and foot, very slight discolouration to cloth, lower outer corners of covers slightly bumped), the two volumes contained within a single modern blue cloth slipcase. Provenance: F.S.Harries (ownership inscriptions, dated 1913).

FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF ANTARCTIC LITERATURE, WITH THE VERY RARE DUST-JACKETS. There was great public interest in the story of Scott's British Antarctic Expedition: the publishers, anticipating the demand, produced a large print-run of the first edition in late autumn winter of 1913. The frequency with which this first edition has appeared at auction over the last 20 years (59 records since February 1976) attests to the fact that it is still a relatively common work. However, the records show that in the last 20 years there has only been one other set sold with their dust-jackets. (2)
