When the filming of Goldfinger was completed in August 1964, a promotional tour of the U.K. and the States of the original 'Special Effects' Aston Martin DB5 was organized by Eon Productions. Prior to this punishing schedule the car was substantially overhauled and according to Dave Worrall, author of the definitive account of the Bond Aston The Most Famous Car In The World, some of the ...'James Bond Devices'...were slightly modified so that they could cope with the rigours of the publicity tour.... Also one feature of the Aston not seen in the film was ...the weapons tray concealed under the driver's seat. For display purposes only, a dummy grenade, throwing-knife and Mauser Pistol were located in the tray for use whenever the car was exhibited.. These additional features were to cause considerable problems with Customs when travelling across various borders in Europe. The promotional tour of the Aston however was a phenomenal success, and is largely regarded as the beginning of 'Bondmania'. As Worrall recounts ...the promotion of the 'James Bond Aston Martin DB5' is unrivalled in the history of the motoring industry, and most definitely the envy of every car manufacturer in the world...
The rare edition of the DB007 Special instruction booklet in this lot was designed to accompany the one-third scale replica James Bond DB5 presented to T.M. The Queen and Prince Philip for their six-year old son H.R.H. Prince Andrew, when they visited Aston Martins' headquarters at Newport Pagnell on April 4th, 1966. This brilliant battery-operated scale model incorporated all the devices of the original Bond car, [some however adapted to suit the age of the driver] features included: cap-firing guns, smoke-discharger, bullet-screen, rotating number plates, water rather than oil spraying units and smoke discharger.
Bob Stevenson, the vendor of the prop Mauser and the instruction booklet in this lot, took the 'Special Effects' Aston Martin BMT 216A to several promotional events within Europe in 1966.
