This fragment belongs to a well-known group of West Anatolian rugs called "Bird" Oushaks because of their major design motif of stylized leaves which resemble perching birds. "Bird" Oushaks appear to have been woven in considerable numbers with many example exported to the European market. The wide variety of colors in the current example implies an early origin, possibly even into the 16th century.
