Carved with a central reserve depicting an embracing couple, surrounded by four shaped compartments carved with petals, alternating with rosettes within diaper band borders and incised with a large flowerhead on the reverse

Lot Essay

Palettes of this type, often referred to as cosmetic trays, were popular in early Gandharan art. Of secular character they are generally decorated with scenes from classical mythology, see S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Images from Early India, 1985, cat. nos. 63-71.
