A black stone stele of Buddha Akshobhya
India, Bihar, Pala period, 10th/11th Century
Well carved seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, supported on a stepped base with addorsed lions and elephants, his face with a benign expression with downcast eyes and a conical headdress, wearing a sanghati draped over one shoulder and with a vajra placed on an overhanging cloth before him, flanked by Bodhisattvas and two apsaras on swirling clouds, the arched mandorla centering a nimbus, both with stylized foliate borders
