A PAIR OF FINE KESI HANGING SCROLLS

Each finely woven and painted with related scenes depicting the Dragon Boat Festival, both with elaborate river landscapes showing figures rowing long, slender dragon-headed boats amongst sampans, with onlookers standing on the banks of the river or viewing from above on terraced pavilions, the banks studded with verdant trees receding to cloud-enveloped mountains in the backround, all woven in muted tones of green, blue, yellow, rust and brown with highlights in gold and the details finely painted in black; together with a third scroll of calligraphy, ink on silk, similarly mounted to form a set

Lot Essay

The calligraphy of the third scroll is by Yun Wang and describes the Dragon Boat races on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Suzhou area, regatta by day, festive lanterns at night.
