The distinctive decoration of shou characters incorporated into the Three Friends motif was popular during the reign of the Jiajing emperor due to his attachment to Daoism.
Compare two similar jars with Jiajing marks, formerly in the Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Clark Collection, included in the O.C.S. exhibition of Ming Blue and White, Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1946, Catalogue, no. 71, and sold in our London rooms, 7 June 1993, lot 49.
