FOUR HUANGHUALI BRUSHPOTS, BITONG

One tapering very slightly to a beaded foot rim; one sketchily carved with a duck in flight peering down at its mate standing beneath graceful grasses, an inscription, Han ting luo yan, Wu zi chun ri and two seals, both reading Luo Ping, carved, possibly later, on the reverse; the third carved in relief with the 'Three Friends' growing from rocks, and with the inscription, Sui han san you, to one side; the smallest with beaded mouth and foot rim, the latter outlining the shape of the three shallow integral supports

Lot Essay

The inscription, Han ting luo yan, is descriptive and simply mentions the geese descending on the reedy shore. It is dated Wu zi chun ri, Spring 1768, and signed Luo Ping (1733-1799). The inscription Sui han san you refers to the Three Friends of Winter.
