The tapering, arched hollow body raised on two inwardly curved feet at the broadest end and on two post and hemispherical feet approximately two-thirds of the way to the smaller rounded end (jiaowei) which has a carved hardwood inlay, the top inlaid with thirteen mother-of-pearl discs (hui) positioned below one of the seven strings stretched over the bridge (yueshan) and attached to the seven tuning pegs (zhen) projecting from the underside, the underside also with two narrow rectangular sound holes

This lot is dated basically Ming Dynasty with restoration in the Qing Dynasty.

Lot Essay

Two inscriptions written on the interior and visible through the sound holes on the underside read, 'Bayue Wanli Jiaying zongxiari', or eighth month, Jiaying year (1614), Wanli period; and 'Yushan Yanzheng Tianchishi zhi', or made by Yanzheng. Yanzheng was active in the Wanli period and founder of the so-called Yushan school of qin playing.
