cover -- 1809 (18 Sept.) and 1810 (25 Jan.) entire letters, the former from an officer of the Royal Irish Regt. held prisoner by the French at Valenciennes, addressed to Sir Rupert George at the Transport Office in London, asking for help in securing the release of a fellow prisoner (a civilian), the address panel with fine black oval London "SHIP/(crown)/LETTER"; the latter from a French naval Captain captured at Trafalgar, to "Lord Nappier" in London, pleading for repatriation because of his ill health, the writer explains that after capture he was transferred to a ship on which Lord Napier's son was serving and which led to them becoming friends - the accompanying letter insert from Lord Napier to Sir Rupert George, dated 30th January 1810 (the very same day that Lord Napier received the letter of appeal), puts forward the Captain's plea for release; fine and most interesting
