Lot Essay

Roger Billcliffe writes (loc cit.) "Patrick did no official work as a War Artist though spent a lot of his time close to the Fronts in North Africa and Italy, latterly at Capua, where he helped train other Camouflage Officers, including the late Sir William Coldstream. Painting, as he had practised it before the war, was out of the question but he did make time to sketch in pencil and watercolour whenever he could. He had always drawn out in the open air but the differences here was that these sketches were not intended as notes for paintings to be made in the studio. They reflect the strong light and colours of the Mediterranean countries, all of which was captured in watercolour.
