Lot Essay

This oil relates to a large altarpiece which Scott presented to the new Catholic Chapel of St. Patrick, Lothian Street, Edinburgh during 1835 in gratitude for support received during his study tour of Italy. Another version of this subject is in the permanent collection of the National Galleries of Scotland, The Mound, Edinburgh.
