Lot Essay

A George III mahogany torchère of similar design, from the Humphrey W. Cook Collection was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 21 22 January 1998, lot 424.
The pattern derives from a Gothic 'candlestand', illustrated in T. Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. CXLIV.
