Inlaid overall with ebonised lines, the hinged top enclosing a later mirror and a later removable metal liner, with tapering sides and brass carrying-handles, the underside with a tap, on a stand with a plain frieze, on square tapering legs, brass caps and leather castors

Lot Essay

Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co. provided a pattern for one of these elliptical mahogany 'cellaret' with 'brass hoops lacquered' and a herm-legged stand in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1st ed., 1788, pl. 37.
A closely related cellaret was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 26 May 1988, lot 31.
